Australian First: Security Company Deploys Drones at Skyfire 2025 to Revolutionise Surveillance

Innovation News
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Canberra, March 21, 2025 – Skyfire has been one of Canberra’s most iconic annual events since 1989, drawing over 120,000 attendees to witness a breathtaking spectacle of pyrotechnics and aerial displays.

For the first time in Australia, Leader Security and KJR deployed advanced AI-powered drone technology at Skyfire 2025, revolutionising event security and setting a new benchmark for technology-driven surveillance. This historic operation showcased the potential of drones to enhance public safety, deliver real-time intelligence to security teams, and improve emergency response coordination.

Pioneering Technology in Event Security

Leader Security is a trusted provider of advanced security solutions, specialising in integrating cutting-edge technology to enhance public safety. KJR is a leading technology consulting firm focused on AI-powered data analytics to improve operational efficiency and situational awareness. Together, they redefined security operations at Canberra’s major event through innovative drone deployments.

Deploying a fleet of seven cutting-edge drones, including the newly released DJI Dock 3 – equipped with a brand new DJI Matrice 4TD, Leader Security and KJR executed a first-of-its-kind technological operation that delivered an unprecedented real-time aerial perspective to the event. The trial operation provided event organisers with high-resolution video feeds, allowing instant updates on crowd dynamics, potential security threats, traffic management and emergency response coordination. This unprecedented level of situational awareness allowed for quick decision-making and more effective event management.

“This was a true market-first for Australia,” said Troy Cassell, General Manager at Leader Security. “No security provider or event organiser in the country has ever utilised drones in this way before. We successfully demonstrated how drone technology can transform security and event management, significantly enhancing real-time decision-making.”

AI-Powered Insights Transforming Event Management

Additionally, over 170GB of footage was collected by the drones and is now undergoing sophisticated AI-driven analysis, unlocking valuable insights into crowd movements, vehicle tracking, and event flow efficiency. This post-event intelligence provides deep analytics, identifying peak times, congestion points, and behavioural patterns that will optimise how large-scale events are planned and managed in the future. These insights will help improve event planning and security strategies for future large-scale gatherings.

We want KJR’s AI-powered remote data technology to be a ‘game-changer' and we’re really excited to be working with Leader Security who are really shaking things up in the industry. This technology will revolutionise event management. It is capable of providing real-time situational awareness and AI analytics as well as much deeper post-event analytics. By analysing vast amounts of data collected from drone and fixed camera footage, we can generate actionable insights that improve event management, security planning, and public safety.

A Successful Trial with Future Expansion

Feedback from Skyfire event organisers, security personnel, and emergency responders has been very positive. Although it’s still early days, the overall outcome was a major success, setting the foundation for future advancements in drone security for major public events.

“The trial at Skyfire 2025 proved that drone technology is not just a future concept—it’s a game-changer for event security today,” said Troy Cassell, General Manager at Leader Security. “We anticipate this capability becoming a standard feature in large-scale event planning.”

Next Steps

Building on this success, Leader Security and KJR plan to refine and expand their drone capabilities and AI-powered analytics to further enhance event security, traffic management, and emergency response.

“Deploying drone born Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) around Lake Burley Griffin for Skyfire 2025, the biggest mass gathering event of the year, was the culmination of months of planning and preparation; delivering the safest Skyfire ever, with no security incidents reported,” said Andrew Hammond, General Manager at KJR. “It’s easy to underestimate the amount of complexity and coordination required to execute a mission like this with minimal issues. Drawing together multiple pilots, drones, operating envelops and operation hubs; we learnt a lot and are very excited to do it all again next year!”

This ground-breaking deployment at Skyfire 2025 not only showcased the immense potential of drone technology but also established a new benchmark for event security and situational awareness. The success of this operation cements Australia’s leadership in integrating advanced aerial intelligence into large-scale public safety initiatives.
