Background
A State Government Fire and Rescue Agency required the migration of its Application Lifecycle Management (ALM) platform as their test management tool to Azure DevOps (ADO) to support modernised, cloud-based development and quality management practices.
This transition was essential to align with updated technology standards, improve collaboration, and ensure secure, scalable test and requirements management.
Challenge
- The legacy ALM system was approaching end-of-life and lacked integration with the customer’s evolving DevOps toolchain.
- Large volumes of historical test cases, requirements, and defect data had to be migrated without compromising accuracy or traceability.
- Ensuring continuity of operations during the migration to avoid disruption to critical development and testing workflows.
- Managing data quality issues, including redundant and outdated content.
Solution
KJR proposed to undertake the data migration of the ALM data to create an archive in the customer’s ADO instance. KJR led the migration process, applying its proven expertise in tool transitions and data quality governance. The approach included:
- Detailed requirements analysis and scoping to confirm migration priorities.
- Use of a structured migration methodology to map, clean, and validate data prior to transfer.
Deliverables
- Migration plan and execution schedule
- Export of ALM data in a format suitable for Azure Dev Ops upload
- Analysis and configuration of the Azure DevOps environment tailored to the customer’s requirements.
- Migrated and validated test cases, requirements, and defect records from ALM to ADO.
Key Outcomes
- Successful export of data with zero critical data loss.
- Improved collaboration through a modern, integrated DevOps environment.
- Enhanced reporting and visibility across test and requirements workflows.
- Reduced time required for test planning, execution, and reporting.
- Reduced system maintenance overheads by moving to a cloud-based platform
Customer Benefit
The customer now operates on a scalable, secure, and future-proofed platform that supports its development and testing needs without dependency on an outdated ALM system. The migration has enabled streamlined processes, better visibility of project quality metrics, and improved alignment with modern DevOps practices—ultimately supporting the customer’s mission-critical operations.
