Embracing Technology to Preserve Cultural Heritage: A Collaboration with Vernon Ah Kee on the Magnificent Gallery Project

Article Innovation

At KJR, we are passionate about harnessing cutting-edge technology to support and preserve Indigenous culture, art, and land. Our recent collaboration with Vernon Ah Kee, an artist and traditional owner with ties to the Kuku Yalandji, Waanji, Yidinji and Gugu Yimithirr people, is a testament to this commitment. This project brought together advanced technology and ancient heritage, resulting in a unique and impactful piece of work.

The Vision: A 24-Hour View of Magnificent Gallery

Vernon envisioned capturing the essence of the Magnificent Gallery site through a 24-hour view, allowing the location to reveal itself in new and profound ways. He aptly named the show “Way to Be,” highlighting the opportunity for the site to showcase its identity and significance. This project was not just about capturing footage; it was about giving the site a voice and a new way to be appreciated.

Vernon explained:

It was an opportunity to provide the site with a sense of rehabilitation, a renewal. I was always keen on the technology and when presented to me, the opportunity to work on West allergy country, which is my mum's country, and then work with technology and see where it goes, I thought I cannot not produce something.

The Role of Technology

KJR’s role in this project was to provide the technological support needed to bring Vernon’s vision to life. We utilised drones and high-resolution Point Cloud technology to capture detailed footage and data of the Magnificent Gallery site. This technology allowed us to create a precise and immersive representation of the site, highlighting details that are often missed through traditional methods.

“This is an idea of Magnificent Gallery at scale produced through Point Cloud technology, which is a high-resolution scheme. You can see it in a lot of detail, all the way in and all the way out. It makes you appreciate the scale more and see details in the actual rock surface that you can’t normally see,” Vernon noted.

Supporting Cultural Preservation and Economic Growth

Our collaboration with Vernon goes beyond just capturing and showcasing the Magnificent Gallery. By leveraging Artificial Intelligence and Geographic Information System (GIS) technologies, we are aiding in the preservation and protection of Indigenous cultural heritage. AI helps in detecting and recognising objects within the rock art data, creating a catalogue of heritage assets for education and preservation.

Additionally, using drone technologies and AI has the potential to drive economic growth for the region and Indigenous communities. By applying the skills and data captured through this collaboration, we are opening doors to various industries such as virtual tourism, eco-tourism, and agricultural management. This not only increases local employability but also contributes to the technological and economic advancement of regional and remote areas in Australia.

KJR Remote Data Technology General Manager, Aaron Bell, says:

Projects like this are at the core of what we believe in at KJR. We are thrilled to use our technological expertise to not only advance the preservation of cultural heritage but also to foster economic opportunities for Indigenous communities.

Looking Ahead

We are excited about the impact this project will have on the audience. It is an opportunity to raise awareness about rock art, Indigenous culture, and the significance of sites like the Magnificent Gallery.

This is the kind of exhibition that sits most comfortably in Cairns and finds its strength in Cairns. It is going to be one of the feature events of Cairns Art Fair, which is exciting because of the audience it brings. Hopefully, people will walk away thinking about rock art, the local Aboriginal populations, and sites of significance and interest,” Vernon expressed.
