KJR Women’s Leadership Scholarship for ANU AFC Recipient Reaping Rewards

News

All great things come to an end! Commencing in 2021, the Australian National University Australian Football Club (ANUAFC) x KJR Women’s Leadership Scholarship is now in its final year.

The scholarship is a three-year program supporting women playing at ANUAFC and studying at ANU to achieve their best on and off the field.

After a competitive selection process, Iman Koutsoukou was awarded the scholarship and has been working with KJR and the club to grow her leadership skills and confidence while giving back to the footy community she loves so much. We caught up with her to talk about her experience.

When Iman moved 1,000km away from home to pursue a dream career in medicine, having a support network was very important. For Iman, having KJR in her corner has made all the difference.

Iman reflects, ‘As a fresh 18-year-old, far from home, just trying to find my feet was really difficultBecause of COVID, I couldn’t go home, but I also didn’t have the traditional opportunities to build a support network that I could lean on while I tried to achieve to the level I wanted at uni.’

Through the KJR ANUAFC Women’s Leadership Scholarship, Iman received leadership and career development opportunities, both at the football club and via KJR. Resourceful and determined, Iman has achieved a lot during her scholarship. She adapted to a new position as a key forward, joined her team’s leadership group and the club Board, featured regularly in league and club best and fairest tallies, and ran numerous workshops and presentations as the Club advocate.

In addition to seeing her leadership skills improved via the scholarship, Iman had the opportunity to learn about digital technology in medicine through KJR projects whilst also connecting with leading women in the tech field.

It’s been more of a mentorship than just a scholarship,’ says Iman. ‘From the opportunities to learn professional skills with KJR, to joining the board of the footy club…I never imagined I would have the confidence to do these things. Having KJR in my corner has meant so much.

For the club, it’s been terrific to work with KJR to promote and develop the female leadership talent we have,’ says Shawn Wilkey, president of the ANU AFC. ‘To have a partner who shares our commitment to equity across the club and who backs our female leaders in to achieve their professional and personal goals is truly inspiring.’

KJR Australia proudly supports the scholarship which offers $5,000 per annum for up to 3 years of study at ANU. “KJR was delighted to have supported the ANUAFC Women’s Leadership scholarship,” said Andrew Hammond, ACT General Manager, KJR.

He added “Gender parity is a cornerstone of our efforts: as a STEM company – and as the father of 3 daughters – we are aware of the need for positive role models and opportunities for young women to grow their professional careers and leadership skills, be that sport, STEM or otherwise”.
